In 1990, a massacre ended the dream of peace for the small rural community of La India.
Three local leaders and a young journalist are murdered, shot at close range in a crowded restaurant – a crime for all to witness. Thirty years later, the families of the victims are still searching for justice.
Director Paola Desiderio approached us to create the titles and motion graphics for a documentary. We loved the storyline and felt that eye-catching, animated titles would really help to deliver the important message the film conveys.
The main challenge was understanding the mood of the film and title design the director had envisioned to be able create cinematic and informative visuals to complement the live action and convey the key themes of journalism, campesinos, Colombia, and the flowing of the river to wash away sins.
We set up several meetings with Paola to identify the key points, narrow down and structure the best designs. As motion design can be tricky to visualise for live action directors, we pitched a number of different concepts to guide Paola through the process. We created a Pinterest board to streamline the workflow.
After designing a series of moodboards, we went through a selection of different typefaces and focused on the first phase of the project – the official trailer.
The trailer was an excellent trial run for the bulk of the project, the design and animation of the titles, the chapters and lower thirds for the whole film.
Motion Graphics / Cut-Out Animation / Mix media
A creative mix of analogue and digital techniques including motion graphics,cut-out animation and mixed media. Animated titles and lower thirds were created mixing archive footage, photos and textures.
Software: Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
We have completed the first phase of the project and the trailer has now been published. We are looking forward to expanding our achievements of the first phase into the full feature film.
