overview & brief

We were contacted by Fiona who runs Mission Works, a B-Corp led boutique that helps empowering companies to build, embed and act on their mission. She needed a rebranding and a visual identity that resonated with her business as well as her as a person. We were given a very straight forward brief with many references and the existing logo to work from. With brand design, we ask that our clients fill out a tailored questionnaire giving us a more in-depth idea of the person behind the brand as well as the brand itself and visual ideas, likes and dislikes. After a couple of meetings, gathering of research and the filled out questionnaire, we could then develop different proposals of paths to explore within design and identity. From the very beginning, Fiona made it clear she wanted something that felt organic, natural, passionate, educational, intelligent, stylish, warm, strong, empowering, with a nod to the Bauhaus era. Based on budget and the brief, we could then build a structure to fill with designs.

The challenge & solution

One of the biggest challenges was managing budget and time for this project as we immediately fell in love with it. In order to be efficient, we created a live deck to showcase work in and a feedback sheet that made feedback easy to understand throughout the process based on specific slides in the deck. This made the overall process smoother and kept the work going while also amending certain aspects of the brand throughout. Another challenge was creating designs, photo treatment, shapes, colour palette and fonts that were organic and warm but at the same time strong, minimal and simplistic. Choosing the right colour palette with primary and secondary colours were key to creating the overall feel of each design element as well as designing the right shapes and sourcing the right photos for treatment. Another big challenge was creating something that speaks to business minded clients without screaming corporate, impersonal and boring. Through the colour palette, Typeface and shapes we could balance the artistic boutique design with a business oriented technique and knowhow.

The process & TECHNIQUE

The project consisted of a Brand Guideline, templates for website, socials and client presentations. In order to deliver, we created different concepts and went for a minimalistic, circular concept with a Bauhaus style. Having established a colour palette and typeface for Logo, Headings, subheadings and body text led to a natural progression into the circular shapes and colour transparency in the different designs. Mixing organic, minimalist lines with circular collage, a bolder contrasting colour palette, layered transparencies, photographs and illustrations featuring people, nature, or mission-driven activities became the foundation for the process. Using Illustrator and Photoshop to create the designs before turning the templates into a deliverable Canva Brand Kit and design templates made it easier to amend along the way before finalising the assets. We then created the full Brand kit in Canva and transferred it online to the client. This way, Fiona could partake in the overall harmonious look.

RESULTS

Fiona was extremely happy with the delivery of her brand-kit and visual identity. Being able to encapsulate her and her vision and mission for website, socials and presentation was an absolute pleasure and we are very proud to have been part of her journey. It is a wonderful feeling when the client sees themselves in the work created.
