OVERVIEW

An experimental mixed-media film that explores Rag’n’Bone Man’s thought processes when producing music. The video examines the topics of the album, the singer’s mental condition while recording it, and the creative process through which it all came together. It is accessible on Apple Music alongside the singer’s new album, “Life by Misadventure”.

The BRIEF

No.8 Studio hired Alixe Lobato to create some style frames and motion graphic animations for a short music documentary produced by Spindle, a media company located in London.

The CHALLENGE

As with many other times, the deadline was our main challenge. We had just three days to finish the task, therefore the delivery schedule was severely constrained.

The SOLUTION

We were simultaneously creating the designs with the animation tests and after handing the client our second proposal, we advanced to the animation stage. We were careful to  take into consideration the feedback they had given on the animatics too.

In order to make the deadline, we were able to bring in additional animators and as soon as the animatics were approved, we got to work polishing the animation.

We had to change course during the second portion of the assignment and work quickly to come up with a new idea using the same resources. Despite the lengthy process, the client was pleased with the outcome.

The PROCEss

We gathered references from the client and created a deck with samples of style frames for them to consider. After the client selected their favourite, we continued with the animation.

During the animation stage, the client changed the direction of the animation. Due to this, the entire design style had to be changed, which made the process longer than expected. However, we allotted some extra overtime to make up for this and we were still able to deliver on time.

The TECHNIQUE

Animated motion graphics created by mixing archive footage, photos and textures.

Software: Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

RESULTS

Given the tight turnaround and change in artistic approach, we were pleased that we were able to deliver the animations on time. The client was also very happy with the result.
